Gareth Bate’s Jewel Net of Indra is an ongoing large-scale installation that will take several years to complete. It is a cosmology representing the interconnectedness of humanity. The starting point is a Mahayana Buddhist metaphor of an infinite net of jewels, each representing an individual. Every jewel contains a reflection of all others. The installation will attempt to represent the totality of lives lived and the historical connections between them. The images below represent the 325 people of Phase 1 which were exhibited at Toronto's Gladstone Hotel. Gareth has now painted over 1900 people. His ultimate goal is 6765.
