Gareth Bate was born in Durban, South Africa and came to Canada when he was six. He works in painting, installation, photography, video, performance, set design and online. The relationships between people and the environment, culture and nature, and a search for personal meaning are principle themes in Gareth’s work. It addresses the spiritual in a naturalistic worldview. His approach is intuitive, and emotionally driven with a strong interest in experimenting with materials. There is often a profound sense of longing.
Gareth graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2007, and the adult art program at Central Technical School in 2005. he was the winner of the 401 Richmond Career-Launcher Prize, a 500 square foot studio given to one OCAD BFA graduate for one year. He has won the Ron Shuebrook Award for Painting and the George A. Reid Award for Art Writing.
He has shown at a number of Toronto galleries including Glendon, Deleon White, Katherine Mulherin, Lonsdale, Loop, Bau-Xi, Gallery 44, Gladstone Hotel, Arcadia, Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, and has exhibited in Contact, Nuit Blanche and the World of Threads Festival. Gareth was chosen to represent emerging artists in the Toronto Star’s extensive series “Artists in Real Life: The Up and Comers” His work has also been featured in Globe & Mail, Now, Xtra, Checkerspot, Torontoist, Lytearts, Things of Desire, Liberty & Annex Gleaner, L’Express, OCAD’s Canvas and Snap Toronto.
Gareth received an Ontario Arts Council Emerging Visual Artist Grant for his role as Visual Artist/Designer for “Corps Intérieur” (The Inner Body) with David Pressault Dance Company performed at Le Monument National in Montreal. The show will be having a second run in December 2009.
