Every jewel reflects all others in Gareth Bate's Jewel Net of Indra "a cosmology representing the interconnectedness and interdependency of all things."
Presented at the 2012 edition of the Come Up To My Room show during Toronto Design Offsite, Jewel Net of Indra is based on a Buddhist metaphor of an infinite net of jewels each representing an individual.
The installation incorporates hundreds of manufactured acrylic mirrored discs, each with a hand painted portrait of a historical figure. It took six months to make, four just for the paintings.
Gareth Bate's principle themes are our relationships with nature and our place in the universe, Jewel Net of Indra "is a meditation on History and our relationships to the individuals who form it."
