Residual Lanscapes: New TerrainPhotographic explorations with regard to residues of presence and absence that remain as lingering vestiges and phenomena, transforming the sites we enter with our recording processes. The photographers in this exhibition work with ideas of landscape as a transformative field and as a way of fixing meanings of place. The exhibition contains works of varying scale, media and method of production: analogue and digital sources, constructed elements, and documentation of found environments as well as those altered by sculpture and other forms of intervention. Artists: Gareth Bate Lisa Binnie Patricia Brennan John Elmslie Colleen Kennedy Bill Kimber Edie Steiner Cara Sullivan Olena Sullivan Mary Traill
ARCADIA ART GALLERY OPENING RECEPTION Curator: Edie Steiner Gareth Bate's Plastic Paintings series of photographs documents sculptural forms created from layers of plastic cling wrap filled with wet paint. These spacial and formless paintings interact with different environments, light and atmospheric weather conditions to create strange and haunting new landscapes. Lisa Binnie photographs true and constructed landscapes. This exhibition includes images from the Night Landscapes series in which she records the passage of time during the exposure and how the resulting image provokes memory. Patricia Brennan's Windows is a merging of memories, images, time and place, celebrating a century-old town hall in Ontario. John Elmslie has been working in photography since 1990. His first solo exhibition was his 2005 show The Floating World. His location is St. Mark's Square, one of the most photographed places on earth. Colleen Kennedy has a degree in still photography from Ryerson University, and has worked primarily in studio portraiture, fashion, travel and nature photography. Her work was most recently published by Lonely Planet Travel Guides. Edie Steiner's photography and films explore environment in relation to lived experiences in the sites that she re-presents as images. Cara Sullivan began taking pictures when her folks gave her a Kodak Brownie forty years ago. On walks in the woods, she seeks traces left by humans and other animals on the landscape. Olena Sullivan is a Toronto-based digital artist with a passion for places forgotten. Her photography is based on the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, exploring the beauty that reveals itself from the interaction of time with the elements upon the industrial landscape. Mary Traill has practiced as a photographer, fine artist, and graphic designer. Currently she is exploring ideas around layers of time and space in the Junction area of Toronto through photography and mapping. Media Contact: Edie Steiner (416-260-2734) - 30 -
